The mission of the Distance Learning group is to partner with the NYU SCPS community to support, design, develop, evaluate, and advance online education. The mission is comprised of four themes: Partnerships, Innovation, Pedagogy, and Quality.

Partnerships.

Developing partnerships with faculty, librarians, administrators, and technology services is essential to the quality, standards, and the feasibility of online learning at SCPS. The starting point for development of online education at NYU SCPS must begin with forging relationships between those who teach online and those who support online teaching. Using a teamwork approach to form partnerships can help to developing understanding as to the experiential, educational, and technological needs of the NYU SCPS community. NYU SCPS’ goal is to encourage creativity and innovation in online teaching and learning through collaboration.

Innovation.

Teaching and learning online focuses not only on the delivery of content but, more importantly, on ensuring that the content is conducive to the medium through which it is delivered. By constructing robust online spaces that engage learners through experience, NYU SCPS can be a leader in defining the digital classroom. Innovative approaches to constructing online experiences are informed by research in cognition and design. The goal is to provide NYU SCPS with informed options rather than a generic set of technologies or strategies.

Pedagogy.

Effective online education requires the application of best practices for teaching and learning as well as fostering development of innovative pedagogical strategies for individual disciplines. Training, educating and supporting instructors will ensure that online education equals quality pedagogy

Quality.

For online education to be effective, the technology must be stable, usable, and able to achieve the pedagogical goals of faculty. Technology is the backbone of online education, which makes it imperative that online systems evolve out of the educational needs.
