NYU SCPS Online: Minimum Technology Requirements

The following operating systems, browsers, software applications and hardware necessary for NYU-SCPS Online courses using Epsilen is listed below.

Operating Systems and Browsers

Faculty and students must have unlimited access to a Mac or PC with at least 256 MB of RAM, (though more, say 1 GB is better) and broadband Internet access with one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7 and Internet Explorer 8 or Firefox 3++
  • Macintosh OSX 10.3++ and Safari 4++

    All browsers must be Java and JavaScript enabled and have pop up blockers disabled

Software Applications

It is recommended that faculty and students have the following software applications installed on their machines:

Audio and Video Hardware

For those faculty and students in live real-time online courses require a microphone and speakers or headset communicate. A video camera is recommended. For all faculty attending the Faculty Development Program and for those faculty who teach live real time online classes a headset is required. SCPS Distance Learning does not supply headsets for faculty.

The following headset and web cam products were found to be compatible with the Wimba's Live Classroom software.

Webcams

These webcams and headsets work with NYU SCPS Online--they also may be used for other software programs. We suggest a web cam and headset so that you can be seen by your peers and a headset to provide better audio quality. NYU SCPS is not responsible for the maintenance or warranty of these products but our help desk can help you configure your web cam and headset.

Ensuring Your Computer is Compatible with the Real-Time Online Technology

For all faculty attending the Faculty Development Program and for those faculty who teach live real-time online classes it is essential to test to ensure your computer and browser is configured to work with the Wimba LIve Classroom tool. Test your computer now using the online wizard.

Minimum Technology Skills

• Faculty should have a working knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, and Word, and Adobe Acrobat Reader (Adobe Professional preferred).

• Faculty must be comfortable with using digital technologies and digital library resources, basic Web browsing and searching, and email.
