NYU SCPS Online: Minimum Technology Requirements

The following operating systems, browsers, software applications and hardware necessary for NYU-SCPS Online courses using Epsilen is listed below.

Operating Systems and Browsers

Faculty and students must have unlimited access to a MAC or PC computer with at least 256 MB of RAM, and broadband Internet access with one of the following operating systems:

• Windows 2000, XP, or Vista and Internet Explorer 6 or Firefox 3++
• Macintosh OSX 10.3++ and Safari 3++

All browsers must be Java and JavaScript enabled and have pop up blockers disabled.

Software Applications

It is recommended that faculty and students have the following software applications installed on their machines:

• Microsoft PowerPoint

• Microsoft Word

• Microsoft Excel

• Adobe Acrobat Reader

Audio and Video Hardware

For those faculty and students in live real-time online courses require a microphone and speakers or headset communicate. A video camera is recommended. For all faculty attending the Faculty Development Program and for those faculty who teach live real time online classes a headset is required. SCPS Distance Learning does not supply headsets for faculty.

The following headset and web cam products were found to be compatible with the Wimba's Live Classroom software.

• For notebooks

These products are not exclusive in their compatibility with Wimba's Live Classroom. They are suggested purchases for SCPS Online students and faculty using Epsilen as the Learning Management System. NYU SCPS is not responsible for the maintenance or warranty of these products beyond basic hardware technical support administered by our 24 hour Help Desk.

Ensuring Your Computer is Compatible with the Synchronous Technology

For all faculty attending the Faculty Development Program and for those faculty who teach live synchronous classes it is essential to test to ensure your computer and browser is configured to work with the Wimba LIve Classroom tool. Test your computer now using the online wizard.

Minimum Technology Skills

• Faculty should have a working knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, and Word, and Adobe Acrobat Reader (Adobe Professional preferred).

• Faculty must be comfortable with using digital technologies and digital library resources, basic Web browsing and searching, and email.
