FACULTY DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP PROGRAM [Register Now]
Workshops are available from November 2009 through May 2010

The Faculty Development Program works with instructors to develop the skills necessary to design and deliver online courses using NYU SCPS Online. NYU SCPS Online utilizes the Epsilen Global Learning Management System and Wimba's Live Classroom to support online course delivery. In addition to introducing faculty to the tools of NYU SCPS Online, the Faculty Development Program will address topics essential to effective online teaching and learning such as online course preparation, pedagogical strategies, online student assessment techniques, and best practices in online classroom management.

Instructors teaching online must attend seven online workshops, totaling 8.5 hours or meet in person with a staff member of the distance learning office, attend an intensive workshop and complete the asynchronous tutorials. These workshops introduce online pedagogy and the tools of NYU SCPS Online, our digital environment for teaching and learning. Teaching an online course differs from traditional classroom instruction; it requires more intense initial preparation and class formats, such as lectures, need to be re-thought for online classes. Instructors who complete the SCPS Distance Learning Workshops, will have a good sense of the challenges and opportunities of the online teaching environment and will make a strong start at transforming courses for online delivery.

In the spirit of preparing you for teaching online, we will model best practices and approaches. Most workshops take place online--some have scheduled meetings, (synchronous) and others are completed at your own pace (asynchronously). We are also hosting a series of workshops in our new lab at 50 Cooper Square. For online workshops, a modern computer with a reliable broadband Internet connection is required. Faculty may complete the workshops from their homes or offices (Details on technical requirements appears below.) Our Faculty Development workshops are offered as:

Real Time Online Workshops: An online environment where the workshop instructor and faculty interact in a real-time, digital environment.

Asynchronous Tutorials: An online where faculty members work independently to complete different learning activities and modules at their own pace.

Onsite Workshops: At our offices, 50 Cooper Square, Suite 300, NY NY. A laptop will be provided for you, but you may bring your own.
